Mongolia Charity
Rally 2008
10,000 miles of pot-holes, bandits and
dodgy suspension…
Oh, and it’s all for charity
The
Mongolia Charity Rally is a pan-continental drive across five
mountain ranges, two deserts and more barren and inhospitable lands
than you care to shake a gear-stick at. Starting in London, the
final destination is the capital of Mongolia, beyond the Gobi
desert, Ulaanbaatar.
On 19 July 2008
Team REMIT will set forth from Horncastle, Lincolnshire. We will be
running approximately 2 weeks behind all the other teams, as they
will have already set off from London on the 5th. Once
off the island the road is our shepherd - we could choose to take in
the delights of Poland, Ukraine and Russia, or boldly point our
bikes in a southerly direction towards Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan,
Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
Whichever road we
take, we’ll be faced with a wealth of makeshift mechanics, border
bribery, mutton kebabs and pure unadulterated adventure, before
passing into the realms of immortal glory at the finish line in
central Mongolia.
The aims of this mad event are 3 fold.
1:- To raise money for CAMDA. A UK charity that works solely with
Mongolian nomadic families by helping them to retain their very
fragile way of life through education and veterinary
programs. This is important as if they are
unable to continue with their nomadic lifestyle the families end up
living in the towns and cities in accommodation
that can only just be described as slums.
2:- To raise money for When You Wish Upon A Star. Another UK charity
that helps families of children with life threatening illness's by
either providing parents and siblings with rest bite care or by try
to make a 'wish' come true for the very ill child.
3:- This is probably the most important part of what we are doing.
When we finally get to Ulaan Baatar we will donate both of the
bikes, all spares, riding and camping equipment and any spare cash
directly to the CDPF (Children's Development and Protection Fund).
This charity is a Mongolian charity that works to help the street
children by giving them safe shelter and an education and removes
them from the horrors of having to live under the streets in the
steam pipe ducts in winter temperatures of -20 and lower.
